We got up at 6 a.m. and walked through the empty streets to explore the Cathedral, arriving just as its' bells went off. We quietly explored the interior as people were praying in a lower chapel, and enjoyed all of the stages of architecture visible from the cloister. It was SO peaceful. We were glad we got up early!
Tour Day 2: An Early Morning Stroll, Historic Walking Tour, and Burg Eltz
Our Early Morning at Trier CathedralTrier Cathedral is the oldest north of the Alps due to its' Roman nucleus from the 4th century. According to medieval tradition Helena, the mother of Emperor Constantine, donated her house to convert into the Bishop's Church. A residence has been verified below the Cathedral so this is possible. Trier has been the seat of a bishop since the second half of the 3rd century. From the Middle Ages to the beginning of the 19th century the Trier archbishop was an electoral prince, meaning he was among the 7 electors of the Holy Roman Emperor. Trier Cathedral is a compilation of 1700 years of the Christian faith, art and architectural history. The Cathedral and its' adjacent Church of Our Lady was placed on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1986. It was a delight to explore!

Moseying Along the MoselAfter our morning walking tour we climbed on the bus and journeyed along the Mosel River toward Burg Eltz with a lunch stop at Beilstein. It was raining so we had to eat indoors, but the food was delicious and a great place to buy wine if you wanted some for later. We would have liked to quickly hike up to the ruined castle but it was raining so hard we nixed the idea. It is a great excuse to come back!

These Are a Few of My Favorite Things!
My favorite things from our time in Trier were the Archaeological Museum, our early morning exploration of the Dom at its' most peaceful, and our local guide Paula's walking tour. I'm a history nerd so these things were right up my alley!!
